Britain’s countryside is being hit by more intense rainstorms due to climate change, and are having a consequential affect on the rivers that run through our towns and cities. York is no exception, and the long awaited trials of the next generation of flood defences, which have already attracted interest from disaster-hit communities across the globe, have begun in Yorkshire.

A contract, finalised between City of York Council, Birse Civils and Aquabarrier Systems was signed in February ready for the trials to begin four months later.

The contract allows for a three-year pilot of this new flood defence technology in the River Street and Clementhorpe area. 40 properties were swamped by floods in 2000 and another 50 buildings cut off by the rising waters, and the proposed flood alleviation scheme has been welcomed by the local residents.

Now that all the civil engineering accommodation work has been completed, the Aquabarrier system has been deployed on a series of trial runs. The sections are stored in a specially designed trailer in York City Council’s depot, and the installation crew hitch up the trailer and tow it to the site. The barrier takes approximately 1 hour to deploy from arrival at the site.

Before the installation of Aquabarrier, 40 properties and 50 buildings in the River Street and Clementhorpe area were affected by flooding.
