Unconventional piling on the M11 Technology Upgrade
During the early contract involment stage it was decided to opt out of the conventional
means of installing the gantry bases and to come up with an alternative.
It was agreed to use the Screw fast system as it had the life span needed and also its versatility as to when the widening project kicked off then it would be easer to unscrew the foundations and move them out to the revised locations.

It was also decided that due to the environmental issues e.g. great crested Newts,
Door Mice & Badgers this would involve minimum excavation than the conventional
method hence minimum disruption to the habitat of each spices.
The majority of the works was done using hard shoulder closures only with limited night-time lane closures, to minimize the disruption to the travelling public.
During the excavation periods it was necessary to have an ecologist on site at all time due to the nature of the licence obtained from Natural England.
