Birse Civils North West successfully complete Sandfields Bridge project for Staffordshire County Council
22 Feb 2010
Birse Civils has successfully completed work at Sandfields Bridge, Lichfield,
the final stage of Lichfield Southern Bypass. The new bypass was officially opened
on Wednesday 10 February 2010 by County Councillor, Mike Maryon, Cabinet Member
for Highways, who marked the occasion by unveiling a commemorative plaque. The
nameplate will be attached to Sandfields Railway Bridge, located on the Lichfield
to Walsall freight railway line.

The £2.1m scheme for Staffordshire County Council involved the construction of
a road under rail bridge with 200m of single carriageway to complete an existing
bypass.
The works comprised the hydro-demolition of the partially completed bridge deck
for a disused railway line, before reconstructing the bridge.
Due to the proximity of residential properties, the team implemented a number
of measures to minimise noise pollution. In recognition of this, the scheme achieved
35.5 out of 40 in their Considerate Constructors Scheme audit.
