Phase 1 of Vault 9 secures uninterrupted Low Level Waste Management service

3 Aug 2009

LLW Repository Ltd, Birse Nuclear and the NDA have good reason to celebrate this week.  On 3 Monday August 2009 LLWR commenced operations on an island slab which has been purpose built at the South end of the Vault 9 Construction Site to provide interim storage for Low Level Radioactive Waste until such time as the new Vault is completed and open for business.

LLWR Managing Director, Dick Raaz has nothing but praise for the creativity and professionalism of the project team working on the Vault 9 construction project.  "We never had the luxury of time - we knew we would need an alternative for Vault 8 before Vault 9 was ready.  We also knew that we were going to have to be innovative in the way we managed the project".

He referred to the complexities of running multiple activities in parallel, particularly the increased health and safety risks "construction sites are one of the most hazardous working environments you can work in.  Our guys have the further complication of conducting both construction and day to day low level waste operations in the same area at the same time but I'm not unduly concerned, we have put into action meticulous safety measures to protect our workforce.  I have every confidence in their abilities".

Paul Bresnan, Managing Director of Birse Nuclear, fully endorsed the comments made by Dick Raaz and added "we are extremely pleased to have played a key role in this major achievement and look forward to successful completion of Vault 9".
