Value: £12m
Customer: Stoke on Trent City Council
Located on a former coalfield site, the £12m Tunstall Northern Bypass crosses
open land eastwards towards a new roundabout at the Greenway intersection, linking
the A527 between Reginald Mitchell Way and Biddulph Road. Two new roundabouts
have been constructed at Furlong Road and Turnhurst Road.
The bypass relieves the effects of heavy through traffic in Tunstall and Burslem
town centres, as well as along adjoining residential streets. The new bypass also
improves road safety, encourages cycling and enables access to development sites
adjacent to the bypass.
10 mineshafts were recorded and treated as part of the project. During the course
of the works 22 additional unrecorded mine workings were also discovered. Birse
Civils worked proactively with Stoke City Council and our subcontractor to develop
the most economical solution for the treatment of these additional mines.
Other works at Tunstall included excavation and landscape fill, foul and surface
water drainage, culvert installation, excavation of a new storage pond, removal
of Japanese Knotweed from brickwork areas, construction of a new underpass and
creation of new areas of public open space.
