Improved performance through better management is the theme of Birse Civils’
largest ever staff development programme called Right from the Start. Birse has
a positive and proactive culture of developing our people and this programme sits
at the heart of that culture.
Put simply, Right from the Start is the foundation upon which consistent business
performance is built and the core message of the programme emphasises the central
role that customer focus has within Birse Civils. The programme re-states our
commitment to achieving a level of improved performance that exceeds our customer’s
expectations.
With the added benefit of regular customer feedback, we’ve identified five key
strategic areas to in which to focus:

Value Management
The programme includes a series of tailored, facilitated workshops with contributions
from many Directors and key senior staff, supported by staff briefings, poster
campaigns, guidance booklets and interactive CDs. Having commenced in earnest
in 2008, Right from the Start is engaging the whole team in getting the basics
done and helping to improve business performance.
Shortlisted for the 2009 Quality in Construction awards, Right from the Start
takes a unique, holistic approach to improving the performance of our people.
The initiative reaches across all levels and disciplines in the company – from
the most junior of engineers and quantity surveyors right up to and including
the MD.
The programme content is tailored to suit roles, Director level programmes focussing
on wider strategic functions, whilst those involved in specific projects benefit
from a focussed approach to the day-to-day basics needed for successful performance.
All our people are encouraged to understand their individual responsibilities
and to manage performance of themselves and those around them.
Birse Civils, Project Manager Richard Moore, is acutely aware of the implications
of not doing the basics'. "I think we all need a reminder every so often of some
of the best business practices that we could, and should be adhering to. The Right
